Press Release

‘Monochrome’
An Art In Mind Exhibition
20- 31 January 2011
Opening 19 January 2011 from 6pm

The Brick Lane Gallery is pleased to present ‘Monochrome’. This exhibition will showcase local and international artists from the UK and abroad. Monochrome will feature an eclectic mix of sculpture, paintings, photography and wall based objects by Ana Kala, Emiliano Bernardini, Wayne Markwort, Bailon, Elizabeth James, Pamela Weinstock, Adele Wagstaff, Eva Wardi, Mario Ucci and Henrietta Sophia Wallace Dunlop.

Wayne Markwort work is based on modernist figurative principles, and hours spent in the British Museum and international collections. Ana Kala's oil paintings depict an array of biomorphic associative elements (resembling single-celled organisms) as well as motives that one can associate with microcosmic organic landscapes.

2Expect to view descriptive imagery captured by Elizabeth James, a photographer looking for the interesting in the ordinary. Elizabeth describes that she loves the way black and white blends together and the varying shades and tones in the spectrum and enjoys looking for reflections, texture, line and form. Pam Weinstock’s work is rooted in a playful exploration of femininity. The series of burlesque figures is partly provocative and partly mischievously humorous.

2Look forward to paintings by Henrietta Sophia Wallace Dunlop that capture the atmosphere of old black and white films, raw emotion and austere romanticism; her paintings are about mood, human fragility, persecution and social injustice. As a documentary photographer Eva Wardi prefers shaping the still world as a narrative, much like in film, the narrative providing an individual possibility to complete in with personal reason.

2View detailed works by Adele Wagstaff who focuses on the observed and is inspired by the figure and everyday objects found around us. Adele has previously exhibited work at the Natioal Portrait Gallery - BP Portrait Awards.

With eclectic influences ranging from ancient Japanese art to street art and comics, Brazilian artist Bailon creates a unique visual language. Bailon seeks to give life to imagination using his drawing and painting skills.
