The Brick Lane Gallery is pleased to announce “Combinations” featuring a new body of works by UK artist Kelvin Halloran.
Kelvin’s works evolve from a connection between thoughts and emotions and an instinctive approach to creating shapes, patterns and combinations. Paint’s materiality and texture enables him to respond to the surface of the works with a degree of gestural freedom – creating abstraction through a sequence of impulses, references and emotional codes. Complex arrangements of shapes and colours intertwine and dialogue within a space – representing not only a precise attention to composition but also maintaining a freedom in his approach and style. The creation of this personal visual language exists and morphs alongside the artist’s experiences and personal background.
Having cared for two disabled sons since the mid-eighties, Kelvin explains that painting has not only been a therapeutic act of escapism but it has also enabled him to create a world filled with his experiences and emotions. A dialogue between the artist and the viewer is established through a series of tacit connections which can be found within the works and hinting to certain common grounds within each of us.
Having had a limited artistic education, Kelvin has developed a strong sense of working instinctively towards subject matter and content, which is skilfully counter-balanced by a controlled grasp of technique, composition and colour palette. Punctuating the surface with contrasting geographic shapes, symbols and occasional figurative figures, Kelvin creates spontaneous rhythms within each work, often compelled by a feeling of freedom and impulse. The opacity and translucency of the paint within the artist’s works complement each other to create a quiet equilibrium in the composition of the image. Areas of bold colours, sometimes of contrasting tonality sit perfectly with the playful randomness of the shapes used. The underlying darker tones in the works become quickly overshadowed by a playfulness and a wish to explore, with a hint of humour, a world which inevitably comes with its hardships but also its privileges.
Kelvin Halloran was born in Ely, UK in 1958 and now lives between the UK and France. He has exhibited extensively in the UK; recent exhibitions include shows at Lime gallery, Manchester; Beatrix Royal gallery, Southampton and Maddox St, Mayfair, London.
