CARLOS ZUNIGA
Biography
Nationality: Chilean-Italian
Studies: School of Arts, Universidad de Chile
Age: 36 years old
Carlos’ work use the dynamic of
appearance and disappearance, proposing metaphorical representations
of the events that took place in Chile under Augusto Pinochet’s
military dictatorship.
The artist works in first instance with
photographic prints of anonymous subjects. These images
are transferred onto phone book pages – “an
element easily identified by the viewer.”
Upon closer inspection, thousands of
names have been erased or blacked out of each page in a
dramatic and poetical allusion to the hundreds of people
who were detained, and subsequently “disappeared”,
during the oppressive period imposed on Chile between 1973
and 1990.
“I look for the best way to represent
an idea” Zuniga says, “I think the first impression
of an artwork should be superficial, in order to produce
effective language retention. After that, the secondary
readings will emerge.”
Zuniga’s poetic interpretation
of these events has resulted in a graphical representation
that is unequivocally unique to the artist.
